The Olympics is tournament like no other and for the world number ones Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic they have been given a tricky start to the tournament. Serena Williams will face the energetic Australian Daria Gavrilova in the first round and for Novak Djokovic he faces a player who he has history with at the Olympics in Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro who defeated Djokovic in the bronze medal match back in 2012 in London.
Daria Gavrilova is one of those players you could either enjoy playing against or one you might not and that is the big problem you just don’t know what you are going to get whether you get the Gavrilova who can blow any player off the court or the one who can be easily frustrated and can quickly be found on the back foot in a match. Consistency has been a problem and her ranking has taken a hit this year because of that being down at 46 in the world. Matches like this against the world number one are a one off one of the biggest stages in the world.
Juan Martin Del Potro will be a tough opponent for Djokovic. The Argentine has done quite well since returning from his injury and has steadily improved which we saw at Wimbledon last month. He is forever a threat once that forehand gets into play however something I did think let him down in his match against Lucas Pouille was his movement at the back of the court and Djokovic makes you run marathons!
On paper it will be a difficult start for Serena and Novak but they are matches you’d expect both of them to win.
