Olympic Tennis Rio 2016 Preview

For some the Olympics is a once in a lifetime chance. Roger Federer sadly will not be competing in what was likely to be his last Olympic Games where as for experienced players including Daniel Nestor he will be competing in his 6th Olympic game and the Williams sister go after history once again.

Well before the games have even got going the drama is happening! A number of high profile names are missing from the tournament due to a various number of reasons whether it’s fallouts, interest, injury or concerns over the Zika virus which does mean Montreal champion Simona Halep will not be taking part.

Throughout the day more drama as Stan Wawrinka has become the latest Swiss player to withdraw from the games following the injured Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic with the 19 year old focusing on preparing for the US Open leaving Martina Hingis currently without a doubles partner.

A number of WTA stars are currently stranded in Montreal including Kerber, Errani, Vinci, Gavrilova, Vesnina and many more after their flight to Rio was abandoned due to mechanical difficulties leaving the players currently stuck at the airport trying to find a way of getting to Rio in time!

The highest profile names out of the competition include Federer, Wawrinka, Raonic, Berdych, Thiem, Gasquet, Kyrgios, Halep, Azarenka, Bencic, Pliskova and Cibulkova amongst many more who will not be in Rio!

For some this will most likely be their last appearance at the Olympics. Daniel Nestor at the age of 43 will be competing in his 6th Olympic games but Leander Paes is going one better and competing in his 7th Olympic games! Likewise you’d expect this to be the last games for Serena and Venus who have made history at every games and I certainly hope they will again.

The prize couldn’t be bigger. The stage is set. The players (most of them) are ready, let the games begin!
