Since the turn of the century a number of players have been victorious in Stanford including Venus Williams, Lindsay Davenport, Kim Clijsters, Serena Williams, Angelique Kerber and many more players and the latest player to add their name to the honours list is Johanna Konta who continues to improve once again as the season goes on.
After her meteoric rise up the rankings and her incredible run at Grand Slams the next challenge was to win her first WTA title and well she has now achieved that and is so close to potentially breaking the top 10 which a year ago would have been unbelievable.
The sky is the limit and I see no reason why Konta can’t go further. Just a few weeks ago at Wimbledon the main stars of the tournament were Dominika Cibulkova and Venus Williams who both had incredible grass court seasons and for Konta to control the matches against both players on way to lifting the title in Stanford.
Konta continued her good form in Montreal this last week as she made it to the quarter finals of the event where she was defeated by a qualifier Kristina Kucova who also defeated Carla Suarez Navarro and Eugenie Bouchard at Rogers Cup.
What next for Konta?
Well the British number one will now be heading to Rio where she will be competing in the Olympics and could join up with Andy Murray in the mixed doubles during the tournament! You’d have to put Konta in a bracket of potential contenders but in Olympic tennis it’s either all or nothing!
