French Open Final Preview – Garbine Muguruza v Serena Williams

A couple of years ago Garbine Muguruza name was all over the headlines at Roland Garros as the Spaniard took out the world number one in straight sets and since she has continued to improve and once again Garbine and Serena will go head to head in a Grand Slam final.

After making her first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon last year and of course losing to Serena the Spaniard’s season did slip away a little and even this year came into Roland Garros with a win/loss of 15/9 with things not going to plan but her route to the final has gone to plan with an impressive couple of weeks of tennis.

All eyes have been on the world number one these last couple of weeks and well the last couple of matches against Putintseva and Bertens have been quite intense but her search for Grand Slam number 22 is still on but now she faces her biggest challenge yet and her biggest final for quite some time.

I love Serena I think she is the greatest of all time and I so want her to win every match she plays but I have say I think Muguruza is the favourite. Serena’s game has been a bit up and down this week but Muguruza has at times been ruthless and the conditions have worked in her favour.

It’s been cold and muggy over the last week or so at Roland Garros which has meant it is difficult to get that brutal power on the ball and we have seen a lot of extended rallies and drop shot after drop shot on the clay these last few weeks.

One of the big issues which has troubled Serena this week is the depth that opponents have got on the ball especially Putintseva in the quarter finals.

depth

She matched Serena toe for toe and was forcing the world number one to backtrack behind the baseline time and time again as she went for it and led by a set and a break however Serena wasn’t done there.

The 21 time Grand Slam champion started to dictate the rhythm of the rallies and when she does that it’s hard to stop her and something she did well as shown above is start to float the ball towards the back of the court with height to give herself that platform to take control which is something she will have to do as a slow start could prove costly.

I heart says I want Serena to win but my head is saying Muguruza is the favourite. This for Serena is her biggest final for quite some time. After big defeats in New York, Melbourne, Indian Wells and Miami this is now pressure like no other for the world number one to show again why she is still the best.
