Two players you would have have had in the favourites bracket have found themselves packing their bags early. Angelique Kerber was outplayed by Kiki Bertens where the exit of Victoria Azarenka from Roland Garros is a really sad one.
The former world number in my opinion has been the form player on the tour this year but sadly had to miss a couple of tournaments prior to Roland Garros with injury but watching Vika today was tough especially in the second set where at 3-3 games all she just couldn’t walk with her right knee causing her terrible problems which led to a lengthly medical time out. Surprisingly she did continue at this point and broke Knapp twice whilst the Italian was serving for the match and then went on to win the second set tie-breaker 8-6 but the third set proved too much and 0-4 down the Belarussian called it a day with her chances of winning Roland Garros over for another year.
Kiki Bertens is probably the happiest player in Paris right now. The 24 year old secured the biggest win of the tournament so far defeating Kerber in three sets but I wasn’t that surprised. I watched these two play each other back in Miami earlier on in the year and Bertens took the first set 6-1 but sadly fell ill during the match so had to retire in set three so to get her win against the Australian Open champion in the first round of Roland Garros is a great achievement!
