WTA Rome – Eight seeded players fall in round two

The saying goes Rome wasn’t built in a day however the empire nearly fell completely in round two with eight seeded players losing in the second round of the tournament.

Roberta Vinci
Victoria Azarenka
Petra Kvitova
Lucie Safarova
Venus Williams
Angelique Kerber

The early defeats in Rome sum up the season for a number of the players. The biggest surprise of the day was the defeat of Victoria Azarenka however the former world number one did seem to be struggling with a back injury which did force Vika to withdraw from Madrid last week with this injury haltering her preparations for Roland Garros which is just days away!

For that many top players to lose so early is a shock especially when you’d probably saying at Roland Garros a few of those names would be down as favourites to lift the second major of the year.

Whilst seeded players continued to fall during the day there was a very impressive win for Garbine Muguruza who was in cruise control against Ekaterina Makarova winning 6-1 6-0 in under 50 minutes with just four points dropped on serve in the entire match.

The best results of the day came from Daria Gavrilova, Johanna Konta and Madison Keys who defeated Simona Halep, Roberta Vinci and Petra Kvitova respectively.

Today see’s Garbine Muguruza and world number one Serena Williams back in action, will the empire continue to fall or will it fight back in Rome today?
