The upset bug continues to spread in Madrid. Agnieszka Radwanska, Angelique Kerber, Petra Kvitova, Garbine Muguruza, Karolina Pliskova and Roberta Vinci are just a handful of names out early with just incredible 1 of the top 20 left in the tournament going into the quarter finals!
The top seed left remaining is now Simona Halep and I think there is some pressure on the Romanian to do well.
The tour this year has been really interesting, the lack of consistency from big names has been a big surprise but the stars of the season have been the underdogs so despite being the top seed left is the Romanian the favourite? Either way the pressure is now on Halep to be the last top seed standing by the end of the week.
The season so far for Halep has been pretty poor which sums up the season for a lot of top players who haven’t been able to get any momentum going at all and five months into the season it’s quite worrying but we know a good tournament or two can be a massive boost just look at how good Vika has been playing this year but sadly she had to withdraw from Madrid with injury.
So far this week it’s been a great week for Simona Halep and her win against the inform Timea Bacsinszky was just like the old Halep which we haven’t seen for a while!
The pressure is now on Halep. She faces a tough match against fellow Romanian Begu tomorrow afternoon and being the only player left ranked inside the top 22 is remarkable! Imagine if Simona lost tomorrow it would be wide open and a great chance for players sitting around about 23-30 in the world like Stosur, Gavrilova and Cibulkova to win a Premier Mandatory title.
