Monte Carlo 2016 Review

Well, who saw this coming? Novak Djokovic being defeated in the second round of a Masters 1000 event? Having made it to atleast the semi-finals in his last 7 appearances I never saw that coming and probably neither did Jiri Vesely.

This is technical Novak’s first defeat of the season and despite struggles against Tim Smyck and Kukuskin already this year I was shocked. It was a great performance from Jiri who became the first player in almost 6 years ranked outside the top 50 in the world to defeat Novak!

The big question is, will Novak return to Madrid next month after not playing the last couple of years with his last appearance being his second round defeat to Dimitrov in 2013 where it’s fair to say he and the crowd didn’t get along that day.

Lucky lucky lucky…

It’s always good to hang around at a tournament just for a day or two after losing in qualifying as an injury means you get into the main draw and Marcel Granollers did exactly that. The Spaniard came into Monte-Carlo with just four main draw wins all season and recorded some impressive wins against Alexander Zverev and David Goffin before being defeated in the quarter finals by Gael Monfils who went on to make the final.

Rafa reigns again!

The clay court season has only really just began and it really couldn’t have gone any better for Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard once won Monte-Carlo 8 years in a row but has won his 9th title there now and his first since 2012! The Spaniard defeated some tough players in Bedene, Thiem, Wawrinka, Murray and Monfils with just two sets of tennis dropped all week. Roland Garros is still a long way away but never rule him out!

Jo v Roger!

Federer and Tsonga always produce great matches. Their quarter final meeting was exactly that with Jo winning in three sets however I was slightly disappointed by Federer who I felt didn’t really find his best in the match at all but Jo did deserve the win it was just a shame he couldn’t find his best tennis in the semi-final!

Signed, sealed and delivered!

What a way to finish from Nadal on Sunday afternoon. Brilliant!
