David Goffin is into his first Masters 1000 semi-final having only previously won one match before this week at Indian Wells whereas for Marin Cilic his record in Masters 1000 quarter finals now stands at 0/8.
I was saying last year I want to see a different player in the latter stages of these big tournaments to mix it up a little and well David has certainly done that so far this week.
To get to the semi-finals he has had to defeat youngster Francis Tiafoe and Pella both form a set down and has now beaten two Grand Slam champions in Stan Wawrinka and Marin Cilic!
Goffin did make a bit of a mess in his win against Wawrinka leading by a set and 4-0 and ended up being decided by a third set tie-break by the narrowest of margins but I like the fight he has shown this week.
He isn’t the tallest or the strongest on the tour but he is ruthless from the baseline and the stand out shot for me is that backhand.
I watched it closely against Cilic and there were two types of backhand on view, they were either measured or instinctive and he is better off the backhand when it is measured and now rushed and just has to basically throw his racket towards the ball.
The control he gets on the ball and power without really needed to break his stance is quite magnificent especially for a backhand up the line. It’s just a turn of the body and he has great control to produce a flat unreturnable ball.
Goffin will play either Raonic or Monfils in the semi-final and I’d probably fancy his chances against either player!
