World number one Serena Williams is back in action tonight. The 34 year old is well on her way to claiming her 70th singles title but faces a potentially tricky match against Simona Halep for a place in the semi-finals!
They two were due to meet at Indian Wells last year in the semi-final but sadly before the match Serena had to withdraw due to injury meaning that Simona received a walkover into the final and went on to win the title in California.
I watched Serena a couple of rounds ago against Putintseva and well it was an interesting match. The first set was a bit of a mess to be honest from the world number one with so many unforced errors but as ever with Serena I felt that inevitability she would still win in straight sets which she did. The second set was a masterclass, Serena’s tennis level was on another planet to the Serena we saw in the first set and Putintseva just had no answer to the incredible tennis the world number one was coming up with.
This is Serena’s biggest match since that Australian Open final defeat. These next few days are a chance to show she still is the one to beat after her last couple of heartbreaks at the last two majors.
Serena is three wins away from her 70th title and her first at Indian Wells since 2001 when she defeated Kim Clijsters.
Halep will be a tough opponent. The Romanian has played some good tennis so far this tournament after a difficult beginning to the year but is looking good right now and who knows could cause an upset and take a step closer to defending her title.
