David Goffin squeezes past Stan Wawrinka despite comfortably leading 6-3 4-0

David Goffin certainly made it difficult for himself against Stan Wawrinka. For the first set and a half it was all Goffin. The two time Grand Slam champion just wasn’t in the match at all and it was beginning to look like being one of them days for the Swiss number two but at 3-6 0-4 down Goffin was broken back and well the feel of the match started to change…

All of a sudden it was 3-4 and then Stan took the set 7-5 from 0-4 down winning 7 of the last 8 games and well at this stage the match looked like going in favour of Wawrinka however we were set for more twists and turns.

I expected at this point to see Goffin collapse but after losing 7 of the last 8 games he then went on to win 4 of the first 5 of the third set and at 5-3 served for the match but as you guessed he was broken once again. The Belgium number one did get the job done in the end winning 7-6 (7-5) in the tie-break but should have cruised to victory and 6-3 4-0 but it ended up with Goffin squeezing to victory winning 6-3 5-7 7-6 but more importantly advancing to the quarter finals to play Marin Cilic.
