March is incredibly just around the corner. However for three stars on the WTA tour despite being almost three months into the season haven’t really got going. Simona Halep, Garbine Muguruza and Petra Kvitova all pretty much packed their bags in Dubai before they even unpacked with second round losses for all three but will all or any find form in Doha next week?
I’m a massive fan of Simona Halep. I think her all round game is very good but I feel like it’s fizzled out a little recently there seems to be a lack of consistency in matches and the ruthlessness has gone and too many times has let opponents back into matches she had control of. I want and hope to see Simona win a major this year I don’t think right now it will happen. In round one Simona obviously receives a BYE but in round two she will be hoping for better this week but could face a really tough opponent in Caroline Garcia in round two who had a really good week in singles and doubles in Dubai so it could be quite tricky.
Muguruza found herself on the end of a defeat to Elina Svitolina which I was overly surprised at but there’s just something missing I think from her game this year. I remember watching her against Anett Kontaveit and I remember in the piece I wrote it was scary! Since then I think that fear factor has been missing from her performances and to maintain such a high level throughout each match is tough but with what Muguruza did on the tour last year levels of expectancy hit the roof and more is expected! I think the draw has been pretty kind to Muguruza who could face Errani who got to the final of Dubai but I’d fully expect her to get at least to the quarter finals.
Out of all three players Petra needs a good tournament! She hasn’t found form yet and has a win/loss of 1-5 and has lost 11 of her last 16 matches across all competitions since the US Open. Also this year she announced a split from long term coach David Kotyza. Kvitova has been suffering from illness and missed quite a bit of tennis last year which is a shame. The draw hasn’t been kind either to Kvitova who will play either the in-form Kristina Mladenovic or the other Dubai finalist and fellow Czech Fed Cup teammate Barbora Strycova in round two.
