The Australian Open is over. Some shone, some made history and for some it didn’t really go to plan but this week the tour moves onto ST. Petersberg for some players looking to pick up their first title of 2016 at the WTA Premier Event.
Belinda Bencic is the top seed in Russia this week after a good Australian Open for the Swiss teenager but bowed out in the fourth round in a close defeat against Maria Sharapova losing 7-5 7-5 against the Russian.
Ivanovic + Wozniacki
Ana Ivanovic and Caroline Wozniacki have both been at the very top of the game during their careers but right now find themselves ranked between 15-20 on the tour and for both form has dipped over the last year and as the second and third seeds in ST Petersburg there is pressure to do well with every tournament especially in my opinion for Wozniacki who in the second half of 2014 was the second best player on the tour and hasn’t found that form again since!
Margarita Gasparyan and Daria Kasatkina both pulled off shock wins against seeded players at the Australian Open with some top performance with Daria getting to the third round and Margarita getting to the fourth round of the first major of the year, the problem for both? They both ran into Serena Williams who won 6-1 6-1 and 6-2 6-1 against the Russian.
Serena was full of praise for Kasatkina after the match saying:
“She has a great forehand up the line. She has a good serve. She mixes up the ball well,’
One to watch…
My one to watch for the tournament is Dominika Cibulkova. The Slovakian was once ranked at 10 in the world but is unseeded for the tournament after time out injured and is trying to build her ranking up again. On her day Dominika is dangerous and not one of the seeded players will want to face up against her in round one!
