Even though 2016 has just begun the Fed Cup is already over for Great Britain after their defeat to Belgium in the semi-final play-off which means they will have to have a go next year. Sadly it means the wins against South Africa and Georgia were for nothing which is in my opinion part of the bad format of the tournament which could do with being changed as it is just simply unfair.
Despite good efforts from Katie Swan and Heather Watson pushing their opponents to three sets they just couldn’t find the breakthrough in the final set to get a point on the board for Great Britain with Belgium up 2-0 in the tie meaning the doubles match wasn’t played as it would have no baring on the outcome.
Sadly this is the format of the tournament. I think it is harsh and needs a bit of an update to help teams try and progress in the tournament. Hopefully this is just only the start for Great Britain. Rae and Smith did well in the doubles and we have plenty of singles players doing well at the moment in Watson, Swan, Broady, Konta and of course Laura Robson back playing tennis.
