It is the first time in his career that Rafael Nadal has gone out in the first round of the Australian Open after his five set loss to Fernando Verdasco despite being up two sets to one. I woke up and saw the end of the second set and the beginning of the third set and it this point it did look like Nadal may pull away he did look in control of the match and then I fell asleep and the next thing you know Verdasco is ahead and wins!
In my preview for the match I did say an upset was on the cards but it’s still quite a shock. It just shows how far away Nadal is from the top of the game at the moment. Despite looking good for his lead at two sets to one up Verdasco was still playing well and was incredibly dangerous off the forehand as I mentioned in the preview which was one of the talking points in their meeting in Miami last season.
It’s the shock of the tournament and credit to Verdasco for a fantastic performance against his fellow Spaniard having now won 3 of the last 4 meetings against Nadal have once trailed the head to head at 13-0 and it’s now 14-3.
The big question now is, what next for Rafael Nadal?
