Johanna Konta d. Venus Williams 6-4 6-2
For just the third time in the last 20 years Venus Williams has lost in the opening round of the Australian Open. Johanna Konta becomes the third player to beat the former world number one in the opening round behind Tsvetana Pironkova and Ekaterina Makarova back in 2014.
The result just magnifies once again where Johanna’s game has gone since June. She has continued to improve and climb the rankings and has played some exceptional matches against some top players in this time. This time last year she was on the verge of falling outside the top 150 in the world and is suddenly close to creeping into ththe top 40 in the world!
Andy Murray d. Alexander Zverev – 6-1 6-2 6-3
1,2 and 3 for Murray as he books his place in the second round of the Australian Open where he will be up against the big serving Sam Groth for a place in the third round after his straight sets win against the teenager . This was the second time this year Murray had met Zverev after the two met in Perth at the Hopman Cup jsst a couple ofcouple of weeks ago which Murray won.
As the match went on Zverev did get better but Andy was in control winning the first set 6-1 in 35 minutes and taking the third and final set 6-3 but it did take an hour to get over the finish line in that set. One down, six to go!
