6 finals, 6 titles. Serena Williams has never lost an Australian Open final and with the world number one chasing history looking for her 22nd Grand Slam title to match Steffi Graf’s record. 7 wins will do but with that injury concern in the opening week of the season will it be as straight forward?
Time and time again Serena has defied the odds and continues to show how great she is. I wrote not long ago about how key momentum is going into a major tournament but there are just a couple of player who can turn up to these major events and win them without little preparation. Serena did it last year prior to winning Roland Garros and then went to Wimbledon with no grass court tournaments scheduled in and ends up defeating Azarenka, Watson, Sharapova and Venus to lift the title!
There does seem to be that extra pressure around due to obviously the US Open last year and this injury concern she suffered at the Hopman Cup but it wouldn’t surprise you if she runs away with the tournament. A match against Serena Williams is never over until you’ve shaken hands and even when players have gotten ahead in a match she has the talent and ability to turn things around in a few moments shows what a true champion is made of.
