Australian Open 2016 – Gasquet out, Edmund in!

It has been announced via the Australian Open’s twitter account that world number nine Richard Gasquet has withdrawn from the Australian Open which is set to begin on the 18th of January with a back injury and will obviously miss warm up tournaments prior to the event.

Richards withdrawal from the tournament does mean that a place in the main draw is now available and it has gone to Great Britain’s Kyle Edmund who will not have to go through qualifying for the event but will be in the main draw of the tournament for the second season running in what is set to be a potentially exciting year for Edmund who had a very good year on the tour breaking into the top 100, a five set win against Robert at Roland Garros as well as a good display despite defeat in the Davis Cup Final.

As great as an opportunity this is for Kyle it is sad to hear a player of Richard’s quality won’t be at the first major of the year and hopefully he will be back on the court as soon as possible!
