WTA Finals Preview – Petra Kvitova v Agnieszka Radwanska

If you would have said to me a week ago the final in Singapore would be between Agnieszka Radwanska and Petra Kvitova I probably wouldn’t have believed you. Petra has got better as the week has gone on in Singapore and despite two wins in four for Radwanska she is through to the final!

Kvitova and Radwanska seem to have a thing for meeting at the WTA Finals/Championships as they met three times in Istanbul and once in Singapore last year with two wins each and Radwanska winning their meeting in Singapore last year 6-2 6-3 however it is Petra Kvitova who leads the head to head at 6-2 and won their last meeting in the quarter finals of New Haven 7-5 6-4 not long before the US Open.

Only one of their eight meetings in the past have been three sets back in 2011 in Eastbourne where Kvitova won 1-6 6-2 7-6 against Radwanska in the quarter finals.

I don’t really think a good start in this one is that essential, both players have struggled for consistency throughout the tournament which in a way is a good thing as both have hung in there in matches and battled throughout the tournament to get to the final two.

Variation is key again for Radwanska in this one. She did it well in the first set but in the second set it did fall apart a little and seemed to lose concentration and produced quite a few unforced errors. Concentration will be important and there have been times as well watching Kvitova where she struggles finding consistency behind shots.

I can’t call this one, despite Kvitova leading the head to head 6-2 there is just something about Agnieszka Radwanska this week which says, don’t write her off. I said a few days into the tournament after defeats against Sharapova and Pennetta this looked like being a tournament of missed opportunity as she did play very well in both matches but lost and has fought very hard to defeat Simona Halep and Garbine Muguruza in her last two matches and I think she might just win her third match in a row…
