WTA Finals Preview – Garbine Muguruza v Agnieszka Radwanska

After her first two matches in Singapore it did look like this tournament would go down as a missed opportunity for Agnieszka Radwanska as she played so well against Maria Sharapova but just didn’t take her chances against the Russian and against Pennetta she played ok during the match but ended up losing in straight sets. However in her third and final group match against Simona Halep where she couldn’t really afford to drop a set she took her chances despite being 5-1 down in the first set tie-break to win the match in straight sets and advance to the semi-finals where she will be up against a very much inform opponent in Garbine Muguruza who has been playing some incredible tennis this week in Singapore.

I thought before the tournament Muguruza was favourite to win in Singapore and after her matches and performances so far I see no reason to think otherwise. Calm, composed and confident are three words to describe how she has been playing this week. Due to playing doubles as well she hasn’t had any rest at all having played every day of the tournament so far with a really good aggressive style of play and has been effective at the net when needed as well with I believe 28/36 points won at the net against Angelique Kerber.

Aga has to look to bring a lot variation to the court to help get the better of Muguruza who has been running the show from behind, inside and on the baseline and the last thing you want against a player playing with confidence is too get stuck into a cycle of play without any variation just to mix it up and ask some questions of each other.

These two have met before on the tour however in all their meetings this year it has been one way traffic…

At the beginning of 2015 Agnieszka Radwanska led the head to head at 2-0 after wins in 2012 and 2014 however this year they have met on four occasions and Garbine Muguruza has won all four with three of them going to three sets.

I think history will repeat itself on Saturday and I fully expect Muguruza to just have too much for Radwanska and progress to the final of the WTA Finals!
