WTA Finals Preview – Angelique Kerber v Garbine Muguruza

This could be spectacular. For the fifth time this year Garbine Muguruza and Angelique Kerber will meet on the tour but this will be their biggest meeting. Both won their opening round matches in Singapore with straight sets wins against Lucie Safarova and Petra Kvitova respectively and will now be aiming for two wins out of two…

After the tournament in Sydney at the beginning of the year Kerber led the head to head at 4-0 after a three sets win against Muguruza despite dropping the first set 6-0 however now she only leads the head to head 4-3 having lost their last three including one of the matches of the year at Wimbledon!

I think both players have the potential of winning major tournaments and are probably two of the favourites for this title but I sometimes feel consistency in matches is an issue and it has been on view in some of their previous matches. Sometimes they go from being world beaters to struggling in the same match!

I don’t think a good start in this match is essential to be honest. We’ve seen so many twists and turns which shows great ability and mental strength during these big matches to turn things around.

Watching the matches so far I’d have to say the court favours Muguruza. It’s quite a slow court and I believe Kerber is at her best when she is scurrying around at the back of the baseline on a fast hard court and forcing her opponents to defend deep however with this slow court it gives Muguruza a chance to pounce on a short ball with the backhand down the line however likewise it could work for Kerber who is incredibly strong off her backhand.

I do think this will be a three set battle between the two like their meeting at Wimbledon but I see another win for Muguruza who is in top form right now and to go into her third match of the tournament against Kvitova with two wins out of two!
