WTA Finals Day 1 – Halep and Sharapova get off to a winning start!

Halep drops just 8 points on serve on way to victory!

It was the perfect start to the tournament for Simona Halep as the Romanian took just 70 minutes to win 6-0 6-3 against US Open Champion Flavia Pennetta. Halep was incredibly strong throughout the match on quite a slow court but she dictated play from the first ball to the last ball dropping just 8 points on serve in the match in 8 service games played!

As the top seed there is some pressure to perform and the matches will get tougher with Agnieszka Radwanska and Maria Sharapova up next for the Romanian.

Sharapova battles past Radwanska in 3 sets!

Going into the second match of the day between Sharapova and Radwanska with Sharapova leading their head to head at an astonishing 12-2 on paper Sharapova would be favourite but the Russian hasn’t been playing much at all recently and her last win was over 100 days ago at Wimbledon against Coco Vandeweghe.

Sharapova started the match well but Radwanska started better and after 4 holds of serve each the break of serve went in Aga’s favour who took the first set 6-4.

However Sharapova wasn’t done there and fought back really hard to claim the win over three sets despite double faulting on match point. From a Radwanska perspective I’d have to say it goes down as a missed opportunity as Sharapova struggled at times to get through service games but the Russian managed to do so!

Tomorrow see’s Muguruza play Safarova and Kvitova v Kerber in Singapore with my prediction being wins for Muguruza and Kerber!
