Different season, same story. Arsenal’s failures in the Champions League doesn’t look like changing this year after two defeats in their opening two games to Olympiakos and Dynamo Moscow and it will be now followed by two matches against a very good team called Bayern Munich. However back in the Premier League Arsenal have the chance to put a bad week on the right path as they host Manchester United.
Ospina or Cech?
I think it’s obvious who will start this one after Ospina’s mistake in the Champions League. Champions League has been a competition Arsenal have always struggled in and the only player brought in during the summer was left out of the biggest club competition in world football, it’s bizarre! Cech will start the match and should have started mid-week but apparently Ospina will be on the Ballon d’Or shortlist of 59 players? So who knows!
The impact of Martial has been incredible for Manchester United. He has scored goals and offers something they have been missing in attack. He has shown great pace, power and skill and is effective cutting in off the wing and seems so composed and confident that it is impossible to drop him!
Koscielny a big loss!
I’m not a big fan of Koscielny. I don’t think he is a great defender but he is Arsenal’s best and will be missed at the weekend. This does mean that Gabriel and Mertesacker will play together and one of them will play on the left side despite both being right footed. Koscielny is a big loss as he has been their best over the last couple of seasons and Arsenal need both centre backs to step up now!
It’s a incredible that a player of his ability and experience when he joined Manchester United was being called ‘passed it’ however he has shown how good he is in midfield. His performances this season have been nothing but exceptional. He isn’t the fassest player on the pitch but he does put in a shift and a half for the team and brings composure and quality to the midfield alongside Schneiderlin and Carrick and he should be one of the first names on the team sheet on Sunday.
Walcott or Giroud?
I asked this question towards the start of the season and recently Walcott has been starting ahead of Giroud and has taken his chances. I expect him to start up top again on the weekend and should be looking to attach himself to Daley Blind as in a race he wins all day long. Giroud is available again in the league after suspension but surely Wenger will go with Walcott?
Koscielny, Arteta, Flamini, Wilshere, Rosicky and Welbeck all injured
Giroud available after suspension
Cech expected to start in goal
Rojo and McNair could return to the bench
Carrick available after injury
Herrera could return after missing Champions League tie
Martial & Mata to score
Manchester United to win 2-1
