Roberta Vinci recovers from 0-4 down to defeat Petra Kvitova 7-6 6-2

Roberta Vinci and Petra Kvitova both have something in common this year, both have defeated Serena Williams with Kvitova winning in Madrid and Vinci of course causing probably the biggest upset in tennis history.

After about 20 minutes or so the set looked all but over for Roberta Vinci with Kvitova leading 4-0 and serving for a 5-0 lead in the opening set after producing some incredible winners and looked unstoppable and then all of sudden things turned around. Vinci managed to get a foot in the match and control rallies better and Kvitova went from hitting winners to unforced errors and from 4-0 serving for a 5-0 lead found herself at 4-4 in the set. The set went on to be decided by a tie-breaker and after 6 points at the first change of ends they were level at 3-3 and after the change of ends Vinci won 4 points in a row and took the set 7-6 (7-3) against Kvitova who has never lost a match in Wuhan before.

The first big chance to break in the second set fell to Kvitova after a ball called long on the Vinci serve at 2-2 15-30 set up break point and obviously she couldn’t challenge as there is no hawkeye in Wuhan this week however a backhand down the line and another error from Kvitova on a shot you would expect her to make down the line and Vinci managed to hold for a 3-2 lead. The errors continued to follow off the racket of Kvitova and Vinci took her break point with a lovely backhand slice volley at the net to go 4-2 and then 5-2 up and one win away from knocking out the defending champion in Wuhan.

After a shot long from Kvitova it gave Vinci the most important point of the match, match point and a backhand wide from the defending champion sealed the match as Vinci progresses to the quarter finals in Wuhan!
