Heather Watson d. Yulia Putintseva 6-2 6-4
Prior to qualifying in Wuhan, Heather Watson was on a four match losing streak so needed a good start in Wuhan to qualify for the main draw and she certainly found that. After winning her first round match against Gaijdosova she faced Putintseva in the final round of qualifying and took early control of the match going up 5-2 in the first set and despite Yulia being 40-0 up on serve couldn’t hold on and ended up losing the set 6-2!
Watson’s domination continued in the second set break serve to go 2-0 up and looked in cruise control at this point but quickly found herself 0-40 down on serve but found her way back to deuce before failing to consolidate the break with the set back on serve at 1-2. Despite losing the early break Heather went on and took the set 6-4 to win the match and qualify for the main draw in Wuhan!
Johanna Konta d. Irina Falconi 6-2 6-1
Minutes after Watson finished Konta came onto court in Wuhan for her final qualifying match against Irina Falconi. Irina got off to a good start holding serve to begin and from there on in it was complete domination for the British number two who reeled off 5 games in a row to go 5-1 up before taking the first set 6-2 against the American!
The second set started with another hold of serve for Falconi but could she stage a comeback against the inform Konta? Would you believe the second set followed the same pattern as the first? What are the odds of that? Konta broke for 2-1 and 4-1 followed up for a hold of serve for 5-1 and a break to take the match 6-2 6-1 and qualify for the main draw in Wuhan!
