The fight for a Davis Cup final place begins!

The three way fight begins now. In just over two months’ time Great Britain will be in a Davis Cup final against Belgium and with the team likely to be made up of Andy Murray (of course!) Jamie Murray and Dom Inglot so that fight for the final place in the team is pivotal and James Ward, Kyle Edmund and Dan Evans must show over the next couple of months why they should be picked!

Kyle Edmund

Kyle has never played a Davis Cup match before but he has had a good year especially on the challenger tour and is now inside the top 100 and is the highest ranked out of the three players. I don’t know if a player has ever made their Davis Cup debut in a final! Could he get his first chance in the final?

James Ward

James was desperately unlucky to miss out in the semi-final after what he has achieved in the past but he hadn’t won a match in a few months and is on a 10 match losing streak and has slipped from 89 in the world since Wimbledon to 141. He needs wins whether it is on the challenger tour or on the ATP tour. However James has lost 2 matches since Wimbledon in the first round of challengers to a player ranked at 228 and 441.

Dan Evans

Dan has spent the last months or so playing challengers and futures events and has built his ranking up to 300 in the world right now. The last time he played a main draw match was Wimbledon 2014 when he lost to Donskoy. If he can keep winning then he will keep himself in contention of getting into the squad no matter what level the wins are at for either of the three players.

  1. Wardy is playing a couple of challengers from next week, and probably more, he WANTS that spot. – if the surface is Clay i think that favours Wardy, remember San Diego 😉
