Davis Cup Day 1 – Great Britain 1-1 Australia

Andy Murray d. Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-3 6-0 6-3

After the opening 5 games of the match it was pretty much a stroll in the park for Andy Murray. The opening 5/6 games took about 30 minutes to complete but the moment Murray got the breakthrough he didn’t look back at all and put on a show in Glasgow to get the crowd going. The tennis he produced was simply stunning and Kokkinakis had no answer and you saw early on in the first set when Kokkinakis was broken he slumped a little the frustration set in as nothing he could do would hurt Murray at all and the Brit won in 1 hour and 47 minutes.

Bernard Tomic d. Dan Evans 6-3 7-6 6-7 6-4

For the first set and a half it was all one way traffic in the match with Tomic in control and it did look like being a tough one for Evans however to his credit he did fight and play some incredible tennis and forced Tomic to play at a high level to defeat him and look tired at the end of the match. Tomic served for the match three times but could only seal it late on in the fourth set after Dan took the third set 7-6 despite being 2-5 down in the set at this point!

With the tie level at 1-1 after Day 1 everything is still to play for on Day 2 in the doubles on the Saturday between Jamie Murray and Dom Inglot who will be up against Sam Groth and Lleyton Hewitt however with Andy finishing his match against Kokkinakis in less than 110 minutes I’d expect him to play the doubles with Jamie.
