Any nerves both players had were soon gone as they both held serve in the first couple of games of the match however it was Halep who saw the first break point but couldn’t convert and from there in it went downhill for the Romanian. She hit 14 unforced errors in the first set and her timing was completely off and wasn’t moving Pennetta around and went down 3-1 on the break of serve before Pennetta broke again for 5-1 but seeing out the set for 6-1 with more errors from Halep.
The start of the second set didn’t get any better as the world number two was broken and looked in big trouble but never write off Halep. Some of the tennis she produced in the second and third game of the set was sensational and broke back to love and took a 2-1 lead. Things continued to look like improving for the Romanian with plenty of fist pumps and the crowd cheering SIMONA and then she quickly broke serve after a forehand long from Pennetta after Halep set up break point with a stunning backhand down the line. The pressure was back on Halep who quickly found herself down 15-40 on serve after some good tennis forcing the errors from Halep and a double fault followed gifting the game to the Italian. Just as Halep looked like she may have found some momentum in the set serving for a 4-1 lead we were level at 3-3 in the set.
The tennis Pennetta was producing off the forehand and backhand was so precise and quickly found herself three break points and Halep suddenly at 4-3 down was two games away from going out of the tournament! The 26th seed continued to hit the ball so cleanly with winner after winner after winner taking a 5-3 lead and one game from a place in the final. Even more incredibly Pennetta won 15 points in a row to get to 5-3!
A double fault from Halep sent her 15-30 down on serve and a backhand winner down the line set up two match points for the Italian. One of which was saved by Halep but Pennetta sealed it with a forehand cross court to advance to her first singles Grand Slam final!
