Simona Halep faced her biggest challenge of the tournament in Flushing Meadows tonight. The match between her and Lisicki wasn’t exactly a classic but was one of those where you can you got the job done. Halep came back from a set and a break down at 6-7 1-2 to win 6-7 7-5 6-2 and will play Victoria Azarenka in the next round.
Halep had to fight hard and she did it well. It wasn’t a vintage performance from the world number two but to win like that when you aren’t playing as well as you can is great but she needs to improve ahead of her quarter finals on Wednesday. Halep did get a good number of first serves in at 73% and did well converting 10/11 break points but he winner/unforced error level was at 18/33.
On the other hand I wrote in my preview of this match about Lisicki losing matches she should have been winning and this was another going up a set and a break and failing to see it out. Lisicki hit 37 winners which isn’t bad but also managed to clock up an astonishing 72 unforced errors which cancelled it out. The unforced errors did decrease as the match went on but it wasn’t enough and Halep progressed through to the next round!
