Johanna Konta just can’t stop winning! The British number two has defeated Louisa Chirico, Garbine Muguruza and Andrea Petkovic to get to the fourth round of the US Open winning her 16th match in a row since defeat to Sharapova at Wimbledon but now faces her biggest challenge yet against Petra Kvitova and if she pulls this off it would be one of the stories of the year!
To beat two top 20 players in a few days is an incredible achievement and in the live rankings Johanna has already climbed 39 players from 97 to 58 in the world and just a couple of places behind Britain’s number one Heather Watson!
Beating the world number 9 and 18 is incredible but beating the world number 4 would be Johanna’s greatest career achievement but will very difficult. It has been pretty easy for Kvitova so far with the 6 sets of tennis she has played she has won 6-1 6-1 6-3 6-4 6-2 6-1. As one of the best players in the world she doesn’t have a glaring weakness which plays can target. She serves well, good mover and is equally strong off the forehand and backhand.
If I were Konta I’d would just be looking to continue from where she has left off. She has to look stay on/just behind the baseline and try to stick in the rallies with Kvitova.
Something I’d like to see Konta do a little bit better is defend the forehand corner. There were times against Muguruza and Petkovic when Konta played a short ball they went after the forehand corner which either left Konta a bit stuck and either ended up losing the point via a winner or a forced error off the slice which is a good shot to use in a defensive situation but you have to make sure the slice has power and not too much height otherwise you do invite the opponent into the net and can then finish the rally off with a volley.
When it comes to me doing these previews I want to see players I support do well but I have to be realistic as well as optimistic. Kvitova hasn’t dropped a set and that isn’t because he hasn’t faced tough opponents she comfortably saw off the in-form Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in the last round and I expect a win for Kvitova but I do hope Jo gives her all and who knows maybe cause one of the upsets of 2015!
