At 6-3 6-4 up Rafael Nadal would have been expected to advance to the fourth round with a meeting against fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez however tennis is never straight forward and with his search for his best tennis going on after losing from two sets up in a Grand Slam match for the first time in his career and will finish 2015 with his lowest number of wins at a Grand Slam since 2004 as well as not finishing a year with a Grand Slam title since 2004. Losing from two sets up against Fabio Fognini is the shock of the year in my opinion.
Take nothing away from Fognini at all at two sets down its easy for a player to lose focus and let the match slip away however he didn’t he did the complete. I’ve watched highlights of the match and I couldn’t find a moment in the match where the momentum changed what I did think though was the rallies were probably about 50/50 during the match and Nadal for a player of his qualities just didn’t seem to find any control and domination on the court even at two sets up.
The story is obviously about Nadal however at the same time there was another player at the other end of the court in Fabio Fognini who has made the fourth round for the very first time in his career and before this year had only won four matches in seven years at Flushing Meadows but has three to his name this year and will face Feliciano Lopez for a place in the quarter finals something he has achieved once in his career at a Grand Slam!
