Serena Williams is just seven wins away from the biggest achievement of her career. Serena has done it all in her career with 21 Grand Slam singles, doubles titles, Olympic Gold and many more achievements but is on the verge of completing the calendar Grand Slam and equalling Steffi Graf’s Grand Slam singles titles record and no better place to do it than in New York!
The expectations and pressure on Serena when she steps out on court is something I don’t think we have seen in the sport before. In my opinion she isn’t just the world number one I’d say she is the greatest of all time. Serena’s record this year is 48/2 with just Petra Kvitova and Belinda Bencic getting the better of her this year however Ana Ivanovic and Simona Halep both put up a very good fight in Cincinnati not long ago but couldn’t get the win against her and if Serena is going to win her 22nd Grand Slam title and complete the calendar Grand Slam then it may be a difficult route to the final.
It is certain that Serena will play Vitalia Diatchenko in the first round but to win the title may have to do beat fellow Americans in Sloane Stephens, Madison Keys and Venus Williams to get to the semi-finals but Belinda Bencic, Karolina Pliskova and Agnieszka Radwanska are also in that quarter of the draw and may then have to beat either Ana Ivanovic or Maria Sharapova in the semi-final and then of course a final showdown against Petra Kvitova or Simona Halep.
However the likely hood of Serena having to face a seeded player from the third round to the final in every round is unlikely as there will probably be an upset or two during the first five rounds.
On paper seven wins may not sound like much the expectation and pressure with the whole world watching will be incredible! Apparently tickets for the women’s final has already sold out which is magnificent and apparently it could be the first time it has sold out before the men’s final!
