After her win in the first round of qualifying in the second round Laura Robson faced a much more difficult opponent in world number 61 Christina McHale from the USA who had played earlier on in the day.
Laura started the match very well with a good hold of serve and then asked questions of McHale’s serve seeing a couple of break points and breaking on the second for a 2-0 lead. The Brit’s good started continued as not only did she hold for 3-0 but broke again for a 4-0 lead! In the next game two double faults gifted one break back to McHale for 1-4 but could she hold serve for the first time in the match? McHale had to save break point and held for 2-4 putting slight pressure on Laura to hold serve which she did for a 5-2 lead and one game away from the opening set. Laura didn’t have to think about serving out the set as the Brit broke serve for the third time to take the set 6-2.
The set didn’t get off to a good start for Robson who found herself 15-40 down on serve and in a bit of trouble being broken with McHale taking a 1-0 lead. The break of serve did not last long as Laura broke back to level the set!
After exchanges two breaks of serve the set continued to go on serve with Laura Robson 3-2 up in the second set. McHale got to 30-30 from 0-30 however was then broken by Robson who took a 4-2 lead and two games from the win! Two aces from Laura Robson helped the Brit save a number of break points to take a 5-2 lead in the set and won game away from the final round of qualifying. McHale did her bit and held serve for 3-5 and Laura would serve for the match!
Serving for the match Laura quickly went 15-40 down and despite Laura saving one break point just couldn’t save the other and broke back for 4-5 and the for the second time McHale would serve to stay in the match. From 2-5 down McHale levelled the set at 5-5! Things started to get worse for Robson in this one as she found herself two break points down and broke the Brit and would quickly serve for the set! Just as this match Laura broke back for 6-6 going to a tie-break!
Robson took control of the tie-break to begin with going 3-1 up. At the first changeover McHale broke back for 3-3 and then 4-4. McHale went 5-4 up in the tie-break and then 6-4 seeing her first set points and ended up taking the set 7-6 (7-5).
After her second set disappointment Laura couldn’t have asked for a better start to the third breaking serve after seeing a couple of break points. Laura Robson was quickly broken to love after a double fault gifting the game to McHale. Christina got the first hold of serve of the set for a 2-1 lead. The match just went from bad to worse for Robson sadly as she quickly found herself 2-5 down serving to stay in the match. After a very long game Laura held for 3-5 and Christina would serve for the match…
Despite forcing deuce on the McHale serve she couldn’t break and the American took the match 2-6 7-6 6-3 despite Laura leading 6-2 5-2 however there were plenty of positives for the British player ahead of the US Open!
