Ana Ivanovic could not have asked for a worst start to the match as at 30-40 on serve Serena hit a return which hit the net cord and fell on Ana’s side giving Serena the early break however Ana reacted perfectly to this early break.
I felt the Serbian played to a very good pace and was quick in shots but was also accurate and wasn’t fazed by being involved in these baseline rallies with Serena and was very strong off the forehand in the opening 5 games as from 0-1 down Ana found herself 4-1 up!
To the crowds delight Serena held serve for the first time in the match but had to save break point in the process. The big question is at 4-2 could Ana Ivanovic see out the set.
The world number one replied as you would expect with a couple of shouts of COME ON and more importantly breaking serve for 3-4. At this moment Serena looked in control but couldn’t get her serve going at all in the match and a double fault gifted Ana a 5-3 lead with 4 double faults and a first serve percentage of 31% from Serena after 8 games.
Ana had no issue at all serving out the set as she finished it with a lovely backhand winner to win the set 6-3!
Serena needed a good hold of serve to begin with and certainly got that with her most comfortable hold of the match to take a lead in a set for the first time in the match. 1-0 quickly became 2-0 as a forehand error from Ivanovic gave Serena a 2-0 lead! 2-0 became 3-0 and Serena looked in full control of the set at this point with pressure on Ana to try and stay in it!
Ana held her serve and had a good chance to see a couple of break points at 15-30 but couldn’t find the next point and the game level at 30-30. Ana found her way back into the set and broke back for 2-3! 0-3 quickly became 3-3 as Ana held serve to level the set! Ana then won her fourth game in a row like she did in the first set for a 4-3 lead in this set but Serena quickly broke back.
Serena ended up winning the next three game and against the run of play in the match took the second set 6-4!
Ana quickly put that second set disappointment behind her and broke Serena again for a 1-0 lead before holding serve to take a 2-0 lead in the decider. With a couple of very good passing winners Serena got on the board in the third set for 1-2. Incredible work from Serena at the back of the court and the world number one set up two break points after a lovely forehand cross court and eventually broke after tremendous defence from Serena forcing the errors from Ana.
2-2 became 3-2 and for the first time in the match Serena took the lead and then Serena took full control breaking for 4-2 and just two games away from a place in the semi-finals. 4-2 quickly became 5-2 and the world number one completed the comeback. Serena didn’t have to worry about serving out the match as she broke serve to advance to the semi-finals!
