After a marathon match and a terrific comeback from Andy last night against Dimitrov a different challenge faced him in the quarter finals in Richard Gasquet who beat Marin Cilic in the previous round.
Andy started the match and got off to a very good start throwing in a beautiful drop shot from the back of the court before finish the game with an ace. Gasquet and of course that backhand shot got off to a very good start as well to level for 1-1. The set continued to be played on serve with both players starting the match well with Murray leading 3-2 with a lot of backhand to backhand rallies between the two but Murray’s producing more power and forcing errors from Gasquet. After 6 games there was nothing to separate the two players.
Gasquet started to ask a few questions of Murray but at 30-30 the Brit came up with a stunning forehand passing shot to set up game point and finished it with an ace for a 4-3 lead. For the first time in the match deuce was on the cards as Murray sent a short forehand of Gasquet’s down the line and with the help of the net cord Murray saw a break point despite Gasquet being at the net! One was saved but a backhand bullet down the line set up another but couldn’t take the chance after a poor volley at the net from Gasquet and despite seeing another break point managed to hold serve for 4-4!
All of a sudden Murray found himself 15-40 down on serve after a poor drop shot was pounced on by Gasquet. An unforced error confirmed the break and Gasquet took a 5-4 lead.
It was a very quick hold of serve from Gasquet who took the first set 6-4!
Gasquet did ask a question of the Murray serve at the start of the second set but the Brit got off to a much needed hold of serve and then found himself 0-30 up on the on the Gasquet serve before finding 0-40 after forcing a forehand error from the Frenchman! A backhand winner secured the break and Murray found himself 2-0 up! Just as things looked up in the set for Murray he found himself 15-40 down on serve but recovered for a 3-0 lead! The set looked all but over as at 15-30, Gasquet challenged a ball which was called out and it was clearly wide and Murray went on to broke a few moments later for a 4-0 lead.
Andy had to save another break point in his next service game but won his 5th game in a row for a 5-0 lead! Gasquet got on the board for 1-5 but couldn’t stop the world number two from taking the set 6-1.
In the final set it was over to Gasquet to being proceedings and he began with a good hold of serve to take the lead in the match. A good hold from Murray followed as well to level at 1-1 but who would take the first break in this deciding set?
It wouldn’t be a match without one and Murray came up with a stunning lob to go 40-15 up on Gasquet’s serve and the Frenchman double faulted for a 2-1 lead to Murray! Gasquet continued to defend well and found a couple of break points and converted with a sensational backhand down the line to level for 2-2. A Gasquet double fault set up break point for Murray but the Frenchman went on to hold serve again! A smash into the net from Gasquet sealed the game as Murray levelled for 3-3 in the set. At 4-4 in the set an opportunity came for Murray going 0-30 up on the Gasquet serve and then 0-40 after a volley at the net setting up break points! A double fault secured it and Murray would serve for the match!
Murray served it out well and progressed to the semi-finals in Cincinnati where he will play either Federer or Lopez.
