With her slump in form in recent months and early exit was predicted for Simona Halep when the draw was made however the Romanian has found her feet on the tour again but is still not at her very best. Halep began her tournament in round two against Jelena Jankovic winning comfortably in three sets but’s her last two wins which have impressed winning three set matches against Angelique Kerber and Agnieszka Radwanska and had to beat Radwanska from 0-6 0-1 down.
Sara Errani on the other hand is the last Italian standing after her 6-4 6-4 win against Lesia Tsurenko who qualified for the tournament. Errani led the first set 5-0 and was serving for the set but things did get tricky for her but she closed it out for 6-4 before going onto win the match.
Simona will be looking for her third win in a row against Errani leading the head to head 2-1 and has dominated their last two meetings. Errani is a good player however I just expect Halep to have too much for her. Errani’s serve is very consistent with her first serve percentage for the year being 82%. It isn’t the strongest of serves, she isn’t a player who generates ace with only 5 this year. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Halep go after the serve a bit more to try and force Errani back as she is a very strong player in rallies.
Halep has to play better than she did in the first 28 minutes of the match against Radwanska, she didn’t serve well at all and ended up making a lot of cheap errors but credit to her for turning the match around. Then again a slow start is recoverable as even though Errani won her match you wouldn’t say she played at her very best at all leading 5-0 and ended up letting Tsurenko back in the set from that position.
Their only meeting this year was in the quarter finals of Stuttgart on the clay with Halep winning 6-4 6-4. Despite a slow start yesterday I am going to put my neck on the line and predict a Halep win in two sets!
