After a disastrous start to Flavia Pennetta in the first round dropping the first set and going down a break in the second it has been pretty easy for Serena on her way to the semi-finals this week however standing in her way of another Rogers Cup final is the Swiss teenager Belinda Bencic who has had to beat some of the very best this week with wins against Eugenie Bouchard, Caroline Wozniacki, Sabine Lisicki and Ana Ivanovic on her way to her first of probably many semi-finals in Canada.
This match is the rising star against the super star. Time and time again I make the point Serena has only lost once this year to Kvitova however she’s been so good this year I can’t look at a match and think Serena might lose this, that is just how good she is. Despite this exceptional record of 43-1 so far this year I think Bencic has to be taken seriously in this meeting.
What I think is the best thing about Belinda Bencic’s game right now is that she has her feet on the ground. She is a very talented player but she also doesn’t get carried away with how well she has been playing this year. To be able to stay competitive with Serena she has to serve well and get great depth on balls in rallies otherwise we know what Serena can do.
Belinda is a very good mover on the court however what you don’t want to do is find yourself mid court after playing a short ball and Serena a good metre or so inside the baseline and ready to put it away with a two handed backhand cross court.
Sometimes this is out of your control as with the speed and power Serena hit’s the ball with it pushes you back behind the baseline quite often during rallies and sometimes forces the short ball which Serena will easily put away.
I don’t want to write off Belinda’s chances of winning this one however it’s difficult to predict against Serena winning this. Serena won their previous meeting in Madrid last year 6-1 6-2 and I do expect a similar two set score line however if Belinda wins this it will go down as the biggest win of the year on the tour in my opinion!
