Rogers Cup Toronto Preview – Simona Halep v Angelique Kerber

Simona Halep has never lost to Angelique Kerber in their previous two meetings however on recent form you would have to say Kerber is the favourite for the win after her title win in Stanford last week. Yesterday Halep played her first match since losing in the first round of Wimbledon almost 6 weeks ago.

Simona served so well throughout her match against Jankovic with a percentage of 79% which is pretty incredible and was also strong on her second serve as well. At the other end of the court you have a player playing with great confidence and momentum with some great performances and wins to go with that over the last 10 days or so.

What I can gurantee from this match is both players will run all day long and won’t give any ball up. Both players games are built on their incredible defensive abilities and also the ability to turn defence into attack with some clever shots drawing opponents into the net.

Both Simona and Angelique have similar styles of play however Simona is right handed and Angelique is left handed. I’d have to say Simona’s best weapon is her two handed backhand when she can step up on the court and for Kerber who forehand is an exceptional shot and was on form against Pliskova in the Stanford final. Despite Simona being stronger off her backhand in my opinion and Kerber likewise with her forehand they are still both very strong off their other shots.

This will be a very good match between two very good players but momentum right now is with Kerber however a win for Halep would be massive. My heart says Halep will win but my head say Kerber will win!
