Rogers Cup Montreal Preview – Gael Monfils v Fabio Fognini

Let the fun begin!

Gael Monfils and Fabio Fognini are two of the greatest shot makers on the tour. This match will be ‘Harry Potter Tennis’ the ability to produce some of the shots they do is incredible. However with this brilliance there is also an air of frustration as they are talented players but sometimes they don’t show it enough on the court which is frustrating as they are in my opinion top 15 players.

The head to head between the two players currently stands at 3-3 so something will give but who will take the lead in their head to head in a few days’ time. Out of their 6 previous meetings only one of them has been on a hard court the others on clay with Fognini being the winner in their only meeting on the hard courts in Indian Wells last year winning 6-2 3-6 7-5 against the Frenchman.

The only way I can preview this match is with the phrase ‘expect the unexpected’. Both players are strong in rallies and I expect the match to either be a marathon match or a 6-0 0-6 6-0 score line as you never know what to expect.

I do favour Monfils is this match but at the same time it depends on which Monfils and which Fognini turns up as both are annoyingly inconsistent in my opinion and liked I said they have the talent to be consistent top 15 ranked players.

I can’t pick a winner in this one. I’m intrigued to see the match and how each player performs. Monfils hasn’t played since losing at Wimbledon and Fognini had a good week in Hamburg not long ago before losing a close final 7-5 7-5 to Rafael Nadal.

One thing I can guarantee, expect fireworks!
