Who would have thought it, Arsenal defeated on the opening day of the season at home against West Ham days after the Hammers were knocked out of Europe, but what were the talking points?
Petr Cech was meant to be the saviour at Arsenal but his first Premier League appearance for them could not have gone worse being at fault for the first goal coming off his line to claim a free kick and completely missing it and then for the second goal committed to one side of the goal and left the other open for Zarate to score from about 22 yards, not the best performance…
Last season Payet created the most chances in Europe’s top 5 leagues for Marseille and he was absolutely brilliant this afternoon. His skill, pace, determination and set piece ability was incredible to watch. The MOTM was given to Winston Reid but Dimitri Payet deserved it!
One of the stars of the show for West Ham was 16 year old Reece Oxford in defensive midfield who played like with great confidence and if he was nervous he certainly didn’t show it. Reece finished the match with the highest completed pass percentage than any other player with 95% and also kept Mesut Ozil quiet throughout the match.
Throughout the match the whole Arsenal squad looked frustrated, Giroud was poor and didn’t get much service and when he did he wasted chances. Ozil showed a lot of frustration so did Cech and many other players. Even before West Ham scored there just seemed to be frustration and lack of understanding surprisingly from Arsenal.
One of the performers for me was Sakho. He didn’t score but he didn’t stop running all afternoon and caused problems for both Mertesacker and Koscielny throughout the match he ran after every ball and won throw in’s in the Arsenal half and corners. He may not have scored today but his performance helped West Ham onto their victory this afternoon!
