With less than 24 hours to go until the Premier League season kicks off one surprise of the summer so far is the lack of new faces joining Everton. Everton were a bit disappointing last season in the league but had extra commitments with the Europa League so little investment is a surprise even with no European Football this season but surely that is the aim again?
So far this summer we have seen Distin and Alcaraz leave the club on free transfers with Distin joining up with Bournemouth and promising left back Luke Garbutt who was one of the stars of the England team at the U21 Championships in the summer joining Championship side Fulham on a season long loan.
With those players leaving the club you’d expect some reinforcements especially in defence where they did struggle at times this season but the only signings so far from Roberto Martinez have been Gerard Deloufeu joining from Barcelona on a permanent deal this time round and securing Tom Cleverley on a free transfer from Manchester United.
Everton have always had a small-ish squad but with the ambition of being in Europe not just for one season but consistently they need more options as a couple of injuries and they are suddenly running low on players, but where do they need to strengthen?
I do think in goal they need to look at a new option. Tim Howard had a brilliant World Cup in 2014 but then followed that up with a disappointing season with quite a few mistakes and conceding a lot of goals. I wouldn’t say this season it is a priority ahead of other positions but definitely should be something to look at maybe next summer.
At full back I think they have two of the best in the league in Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines however as we saw last year they can’t play all the time and they don’t really have back-up. Oviedo is injured and Garbutt is out on loan so there is a lot of hope on them being fit throughout the season, maybe an understudy could be signed or promoted from the youth team?
There is a slight possibility that Everton may only have one senior centre back soon which would be disastrous. Chelsea did bid for John Stones however it was rejected but I suppose in a way it’s what they wanted. Bid low and let the player know the interest from the club and then it’s up to him and I wouldn’t be surprised in the next week or so if Chelsea bid again towards the £30 million mark. If this happens they could be left with just Phil Jagielka. I think even if Stones stays they need to sign two central defenders. Jonny Evans has been linked to the club and would be a good option in defence for a rumoured fee of £8 million.
Another position I think they need more options is up top. I do feel sorry for Lukaku as without him they are short on forwards. Naismith sometimes play on the wing or in the number ten role and Kone doesn’t score regularly enough. Finding a very good striker for less than £15 million is quite tough in the current market. I would have said a few weeks ago maybe a player like Javier Hernandez but he looks like staying at Old Trafford now however maybe with the signing of Radamel Falcao on loan at Chelsea maybe a loan move for Loic Remy could be an option?
As well as buy players it would be good to see Everton give more youngsters a chance especially Brendan Galloway and Tyias Browning who are both defenders.
I think a brilliant summer for Everton would be obviously keeping hold of John Stones which looks unlikely however if they could bring in Jonny Evans and Loic Remy for starters then it would give them options where they are short however they are running out of time with the window closing in a couple of weeks. Maybe the best business they have done this summer is McCarthy and Mirallas signing new contracts?
