The top seed Caroline Wozniacki gets her tournament underway tomorrow in Stanford against an opponent she has had a lot of joy against in the past. Wozniacki turned 25 next month and is looking for her 25th career title.
Varvara Lepchenko is the opponent standing in the way of the third round for the Dane however Wozniacki has previous experience to call upon with a win/loss record of 4/0 against the American and their last meeting was a 6-0 6-1 win in Miami last year. I’m a big fan of Caro and despite being the top seed and her head to head record against Lepchenko I can’t make a prediction to say I’m 100% sure she is going to win and maybe that is due to her form this year.
After Wimbledon last year Wozniacki went to Istanbul and won the title and her form in the second half of the season was incredible! I expected her to continue that this year however I have been a little disappointed with her performances in the Grand Slams with her only getting to at least the quarter finals once in the last 14 Grand Slam tournaments.
Lepchenko is a good player with over 400 career wins however despite her strengths I see Wozniacki being too strong for her with her defensive and attacking skills. The only way I think Lepchenko can beat Wozniacki is if the former world number one has a day off.
Lepchenko has only taken one set off Wozniacki in their previous meetings. She does have a game which can be dangerous however I can only see a win for Wozniacki but you never know…
