Citi Open 2015 Preview: Kristina Mladenovic v Sam Stosur

For the second time this year Sam Stosur and Kristina Mladenovic are going to face each other. Their previous meeting this year was in the final of WTA Strasbourg on the clay with Sam winning in three sets to extend her leave in the head to head to 3-0.

At the start of the year I did a piece called WTA ones to watch which I will post a link to at the bottom of the piece and I put Mladenovic on their despite being a very good doubles player but this year has really stepped it up on the singles tour reaching a career high ranking of 35 in the world and currently at 36. I do believe she can be a top 20 player on the singles tour as well as being successful on the doubles. I like Mladenovic, she is a strong player with a good serve and being a doubles player is good at the net as well. She works her way up the court well with the one handed forehand and can get good variation off the shot. On a hard court I think she is a tough player to beat as Sam found out in Hobart last year with Sam just edging the match 6-4 2-6 7-6 (9-7)

Sam is one of the legends on the tour. Currently ranked at 21 in the world she is having a very good year going into the hard court season with two titles to her name. Sam is a former US Open so knows what it takes in the big moments and is one win away from her 500th singles career win. What I like about Stosur is she is always looking to improve her game and her ranking. Sam has an all-round strong game there isn’t a shot which is a major weakness. She knows how to defend well and is one of the best defenders and just watch her footwork during matches she is so fast around the court.

In their previous two meetings in Strasbourg and Hobart it has been Mladenovic who has gotten off to a better starting going 3-0 up in Strasbourg and 2-0 up in Hobart and ended up losing. Against Stosur you know you are going to have to work for it but despite the head to head being against the Frenchwomen I have a feeling we might just be in a for cracking match however it won’t be easy with Sam in great form this year.
