Day 2 at Queens Club was all about the doubles. The teams were going to be Jamie Murray and Dominic Inglot against Nicolas Mahut and Richard Gasquet however both teams made changes with one Wimbledon semi-finalist in Gasquet dropped for Tsonga who struggled yesterday against Murray and another semi-finalist in Andy Murray replaced Dominic Inglot to join up with his brother Jamie Murray in the doubles.
The match didn’t get off to a good start for the Murray brothers with Andy’s serve being broken immediately and the French continued to be comfortably on serve taking a 3-1 lead in the early exchanges at Queens Club. Despite a double fault Andy Murray managed to hold serve for 2-3. Some good returning from Jamie Murray set up 0-15 and 15-30 but a second serve down the T from Tsonga got them out of trouble to take a 4-2 lead. Another good hold from Jamie followed to keep it at 3-4 with an ace. 4-3 became 5-3 with another good hold from Mahut. Another hold of serve followed after a good couple of winners at the net from Jamie on the Andy serve and Tsonga would serve for the first set. A smash winner from Mahut sealed it as France took the first set 6-4.
At the start of the second set it did look like another break may be on the cards at 15-30 and deuce but Jamie Murray held serve well to the delight of the Queens Club which was followed by a love hold from Mahut. Another hold to love followed this time for Andy Murray as Great Britain took a 2-1 lead in the second set. At 30-30 a forehand into the net from Mahut set up Great Britain with their first break point of the match and mid-rally Andy Murray stopped a rally to challenge a call but didn’t look very confident however hawkeye showed the ball was out and Great Britain took a 3-1 lead! No better way to follow up a break with a hold of serve to love from Jamie to go 4-1 up! A hold from 0-30 for France at 2-5 and Jamie Murray would serve for the second set! The good serving continued from Jamie Murray and Great Britain took the second set 6-3 to level the match at one set each.
Mahut found his range on serve again at the start of the third with a hold to love. A love hold followed by Jamie Murray to level the set at one a piece. A massive hold from Andy Murray from deuce took the set to 2-2. At 40-15 France looked good for a hold but some excellent reactions from Jamie Murray at the net took it to deuce and asked questions of the Mahut serve and held for 3-2 and so did Jamie Murray with a hold to love for 3-3. The set continued to go on serve with them level at 4-4. A lovely hold to love from Mahut for a 5-4 lead and Great Britain would serve to stay in the set! Jamie got the job done and the set level at 5-5. A break in play followed as Andy Murray took a tough fall on the grass and seemed to injury his groin/hips with the physio. At the time Murray was receiving treatment the Queens Club DJ decided play Bob Marley’s Get Up, Stand Up and Murray did and played resumed with France 40-15 up on serve before taking a 6-5 lead and Andy Murray would serve to take it into a tie-break. A strong hold from Andy after the time out and he took the set to a tie-break! At the first changeover there was nothing to separate them with the tie-break level at 3-3 on the Andy Murray serve. An ace from Andy extended the lead to 4-3 on serve! The tension continued to rise on the main court at Queens as Murray’s got a mini-break for a 5-4 lead! The mini-break went and Great Britain then went 6-5 up with set point!! A massive shout of COME ON from Andy Murray as Britain took the set 7-5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As Great Britain broke serve to take the third set the Brits got the fourth underway with Andy Murray and held for a 1-0 lead. Arnaud Clement the French captain then got upset with the umpire and the crowd after apparently a spectator called the ball out which apparently made Tsonga miss-hit his volley… The French still lost the point and went 0-15 down and then 0-30 down! The French continued to be rattled and hit a smash wide setting up break point. Tsonga saved one but then produced another for Team GB with a poor volley and a volley from Jamie Murray sealed the break!!!
Just as Great Britain took a 40-0 lead on serve Tsonga took a tumble holding his right shoulder but continued. An ace from Jamie Murray followed and Great Britain took a 3-0 lead! It was over to Nicolas Mahut to hold serve and he failed and double faulted to give Great Britain a 4-0 lead! France got on the board for 1-5 and Jamie Murray who been superb all match would serve it out to give Great Britain a 2-1 lead after Day 2!
Jamie Murray went 15-40 down on serve but Queens Club were on its feet as Great Britain took a 2-1 lead after Day 2 and one win away from the semi-finals!! Andy Murray will either play Richard Gasquet or Gilles Simon in what could be a decisive match tomorrow!
