Serena Williams has already completed the ‘Serena Slam’ holding all four Grand Slam titles at once however she is on the verge of completing this again and keeping the calendar Grand Slam on track. Only three players have ever beaten Serena Williams in a Grand Slam final those being Maria Sharapova, Sam Stosur and Venus Williams (twice) however Garbine Muguruza will be aiming to etch her name on the Wimbledon winners’ board having already beaten Serena Williams at Roland Garros last year.
Serena got the final underway at Wimbledon but not with the greatest start beginning with a double fault and then at 40-30 double faulted again for deuce and then another one followed giving Muguruza a break point. On the fourth break point of the opening game an error from Serena gave Muguruza a 1-0 lead! A good hold from Muguruza followed to consolidate her break taking a 2-0 lead. Serena followed up with a good hold from 0-30 and Muguruza held her next serve from deuce for 3-1 with Serena finding her feet but still a break down. The biggest test of the set for Muguruza at 3-2 as she produced Serena with break points after a forehand error but won four well-crafted points in a row to extend her lead to 4-2! This time Muguruza could save the break points with the set level at 4-4 and Serena serving for the lead. From 2-4 down Serena lead 5-4 and now Muguruza would serve to stay in the set. At deuce Muguruza just couldn’t hold serve and Serena took the first set 6-4 with a lovely forehand cross court.
Serena extended her run to 5 games in a row for a 1-0 before a much needed hold of serve from the Spaniard to level the set. A hold from deuce for Serena extended her lead to 2-1 with the pressure right back on Muguruza. A couple more errors followed with Serena breaking serve for a 3-1 lead and looked well on her way to winning her 6th Wimbledon title. A loved hold for Serena and at this point it’s a long way back for Garbine. Another break of serve followed and Serena would serve the “Serena Slam”!
Serena serving for the match was then broken to love by Muguruza! Muguruza held serve for 3-5 and against Serena would serve for the match. Again Muguruza broke with some incredible tennis, hawk eye challenges and saving match point for 4-5! A lucky net cord gave Serena 0-30 followed by an error for 0-40 and three match points and Serena won!
