Wimbledon 2015 – Caroline Wozniacki v Garbine Muguruza Preview

For the first time in her career Caroline Wozniacki is on the verge of reaching the quarter finals of Wimbledon for the very first time. The former world number one is playing some of her best tennis at Wimbledon but up until now she hasn’t really been tested and standing in her way of making the next round is Garbine Muguruza who has battled well against Mirjana Lucic-Baroni and Angelique Kerber in the last couple of rounds.

I am expecting the match to be a close encounter and I do expect three sets. I’d say both players play a similar style of play. Both are capable of defending when required, Wozniacki in my opinion is the best defender on the tour however both do like to play a game from the baseline and like to go for big aggressive.

I think the problem with the style is it can be a bit hit and miss. There is literally no margin for error when you play like this. The forehand and backhand down in the line can be very good when it works however when it doesn’t the match can get away from you. Against Kerber we did see Muguruza struggle making a number of errors and was a point away from going 0-4 down. To her credit she found her feet and got back into the match. However the second set she completely fell apart and was producing error after error and I think lost 5 or 6 games in a row but turned it around in the decider.

Muguruza leads the head to head 2-1 against Wozniacki, The Dane beat Muguruza in their last meeting in Tokyo and Muguruza secured wins against Caroline in 2013 (Miami) and 2014 (Australian Open).

This will be their first ever meeting on grass, it is tough to predict who I think will win this one. A good start is key then again Muguruza had a really bad start to her match v Kerber and won. With the style both players play composure and concentration are key staying composed and on top of the game should keep the errors down.

Who will advance to the quarter finals? Wozniacki or Muguruza?
