Between the 17th of July and the 19th of July Great Britain and France will battle for a place in the World Group Semi-Final in Davis Cup at Queen’s Club. Final team nominations have to be made by the 7th of July. Neither team has made their decision yet for the teams. So who could be picked for the four man team at Queens?
I think Britain’s team basically picks itself right now. The only question is does Leon Smith (Great Britain’s Davis Cup Captain) chose three singles players and one doubles player and Andy Murray plays doubles with Jamie Murray or Dom Inglot?
I expect the team to be…
Andy Murray, James Ward, Dominic Inglot & Jamie Murray
Andy is obviously one of the best in the world so is the obvious pick. Up until Wimbledon James Ward’s results on the challenger tour weren’t that great but he has shown how good he is at SW19 so should be in the team and I expected Dom and Jamie to be in the squad ahead of Edmund or Broady (singles players) and Fleming (doubles).
Having two doubles players does give us an option, if Andy and James win the first two singles then there is no need for Andy to play doubles however he may do if it is 1-1 after day 1. Jamie and Dom are more than capable of winning as they came so close against the Bryan Brothers in Glasgow in the last round.
French captain Arnaud Clement has a pool of talented players to choose from with so many French players ranked in the top 100 on the singles and doubles tour, but who could he pick?
A massive blow for France is than Julien Benneteau is expected to miss the tie with an injury so another doubles player would be picked. Nicolas Mahut in my opinion should be in the team but so could Herbert, Roger-Vasselin, Chardy or Llodra for doubles.
The team I would pick for the tie would be…
Gilles Simon, Gael Monfils, Nicolas Mahut & Jeremy Chardy
Not only do they have a lot of players to choose from on the doubles tour but singles as well! This team would involve leaving out Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Richard Gasquet. The first name on my team sheet would definitely be Gilles Simon after some good tennis at Queens and Wimbledon recently!
Who do you think will be in the Davis Cup teams?
