Do Liverpool actually need Roberto Firmino?

The signing of Roberto Firmino to Liverpool is a good one but was it a necessity? Firmino plays in a number 10 role behind the striker but we have seen that Brendan Rodgers likes to play his attacking midfielders at times as forwards.

If for example Liverpool play a 4-3-3 or a 3-4-3 with 3 forwards in the side Brendan Rodgers has a bit of a selection problem. I’d expect the front three to be (if Sterling leaves) Coutinho, Firmino and Sturridge. When you look at the squad they have Lambert, Lallana, Borini, Ings, Ibe, Balotelli, Markovic, Origi and maybe even Sterling if he stays. Having options is good but having too many options does leave a problem especially when you consider about at least £80 million of attacking talent might not get near the team!

At the end of last season I would have said Liverpool could do with a couple of decent full backs, central midfielder and a striker. When you see players like Radamel Falcao, Carlos Bacca and Jackson Martinez available I am a bit surprised they didn’t try their luck for any of these players.

Just days before the £29 million move to Liverpool Firmino was being heavily linked with a £13 million move to Manchester United which does seem very odd indeed.

I do believe clubs sign players so no one else can. Chelsea have done it in the past with Marin and De Bruyne, brought them in but have little intention of playing them end up loaning them out for a couple of years and sell them on. It reminds me of what Liverpool did last season, Divock Origi had a good 90 minutes at the World Cup, Liverpool end up buying him for £10-£12 million a couple of weeks later and then loan him to Lille, Liverpool run out of forwards and Origi get’s named in Ligue 1’s worst team of the season by L’Equipe.

Unless Liverpool are planning on playing Firmino as a striker I honestly don’t think they need him. I do think he would link up very well with Coutinho in the final third but as an attacking midfielder which would probably see the £25 million man Adam Lallana on the bench with Liverpool’s midfield three most likely to be Can, Milner and Henderson?
