Karoline Pliskova and Kei Nishikori have both left Wimbledon in the second round, one to a surprising defeat and other to another injury.
Kei Nishikori withdraws from Wimbledon
Another big names has been lost on the grass as another injury has hit Nishikori forcing him to pull out of his match against Santiago Giraldo sending the Colombian into the third round. It is a shame that Kei has withdrawn due to another injury this time a calf problem. Kei did withdraw from Halle a week or so before Wimbledon after suffering an injury in his match and having to retire. Sadly Kei’s career has been hit by injury after injury and late last year he did play some of his best tennis and reached the US Open Final losing the Marin Cilic and the World Tour Finals in London. Not too sure how long Kei will be out for hopefully not too long and he can get back injury free in time for the hard court swing next month in the USA and Canada.
Coco Vandegweghe d. Karolina Pliskova – 7-6 6-4
When I saw the result I was quite shocked. Karolina was one of my ‘ones to watch’ at Wimbledon this year. Currently at 11th on the WTA rankings she has had an incredible year reaching four finals but just one title to her name in Prague she recently got to the final of Birmingham where she was a set up against Kerber but lost.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone make tennis look so easy at times however can make look the easy look difficult as well. Despite her good form on the WTA tour at the majors she has disappointed. It was a third round loss to Makarova which isn’t bad in Australia, an early exit from Roland Garros to a player ranked outside the top 100 and Coco at Wimbledon. The loss is a surprise as I thought maybe a quarter final was in reach but it does open up the draw.
