Wimbledon 2015 Day 1 – Brit Watch

On day one of Wimbledon only four of the ten British players in action were playing, so how did they get on?

Maria Sharapova d. Johanna Konta – 6-2 6-2

It was never going to be easy for Johanna Konta against one of the best tennis players in the world, sadly the draw wasn’t too kind to her after some excellent weeks in Birmingham, Nottingham and Eastbourne beating a number of top ten players. It would be tough to be harsh on Jo as I don’t think the score line always shows the closeness of a match. Jo took 1/5 break points and made less winners but the forced error count from both players was pretty high and I said in my preview the two handed backhand of Konta would be a threat hitting 5 winners off it compared to the 3 from Maria.

Liam Broady d. Marinko Matosevic – 5-7 4-6 6-3 6-2 6-2

Liam Broady has recorded the biggest victory of his career on court 18. The Brit came from two sets down against a former top 50 player to win in five sets which is brilliant! I saw the first set and Liam was unlucky, he went 0-2 down before going 3-2 up but lost concentration at 5-5 and was broken for 6-5 and Matosevic held for 7-5. Broady’s stats from the match were excellent, he won 77% of points on his first serve and hit 64 winners and 32 unforced errors which is a very good ratio. Broady finished the match with 25 backhand winners and 19 forehand winners. Liam will face another tough opponent in David Goffin in the next round and his win at Wimbledon has put him into the hat for a potential Davis Cup call up.

Mariana Duque-Marino d. Naomi Broady – 7-6 6-3

Naomi Broady sadly couldn’t defend her round two points after a defeat to Duque Marino. Naomi like Heather and Johanna has had a good few weeks on the tour recently. Mariana is ranked at 99 in the world and has now reached the second week of Wimbledon for the second time in her career. The first set between Mariana and Naomi was quite close with Mariana winning on the tie-break 7-5 however the second set wasn’t as close with Mariano sealing her place in the second round taking the set 6-3.

Heather Watson 1-6 6-3 Caroline Garcia (to finish)

Heather Watson and Caroline Garcia’s match will resume later today after play was suspended at the end of the net level at one set each with the decider to be played likely after 1pm.
